Performing García Lorca in the UK

Although Federico García Lorca is arguably the most internationally performed Spanish playwright, there is still much to learn from his (after)life on the world’s stages, especially in regard to the first decades of his international reception

In this sixth edition of Hispanglia, María Bastianes will talk about the presence of García Lorca’s theatre in the United Kingdom, where his plays were performed earlier than in many other European countries. She will address how his works arrived for the first time to the stages of the UK, and why they keep fascinating British audiences

María Bastianes is a specialist in 20th century European and Argentinean theatre history. She is a Talento research professor at the Universidad Complutense and visiting researcher at the University of Leeds, where she directs the European project "EStages.UK. Spanish theatre in United Kingdom (1982-2019)", (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships). In the past, she has worked at Colby College (USA) and at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She has also carried out an Andreazza research project for the Fondazione Cini in Venice (Italy, 2017).

Her work on the staging of the classics includes the co-edition and creation of the collective volume Diálogos en las tablas. Latest trends in the staging of Spanish classical theatre (Reichenberger, 2014), the book Vida escénica de "La Celestina" en España (1909-2019) (Peter Lang, 2020) and her forthcoming monograph on the history of the staging of La Celestina in Italy: Performing "Celestina" on the Italian Stage: From Mussolini to the Piccolo Teatro di Milano (Routledge).
