The Spanish film club ‘El club de cine Luis Buñel which is organised by the Instituto Cervantes in Leeds and Manchester is having a new season consisting of four films focusing on history. History has traditionally been of one the prolific themes covered in Spanish cinema. It is a genre in which a director can draw attention to an achievement or event in its historical context, extoling the virtues of a particular important historical figure or simply offer an authentic portrayal of a past time or events. These and others reasons are all possibilities. The films which make up this season are each very different in how they address the telling of history and the reasons for them being made are due to differing motives. “Stella cadente” signifies a breath of fresh air in relation to classical historical films and is ground breaking with various formal scenes. “El angel de Budapest” tells the little known actions of a Spanish diplomat who did all he could to save the lives of as many Hungarian Jews as possible during the Second World War. “Juana la loca” focuses on the life of Juana I de Castilla, who historically has been unfairly treated because of her supposed madness with which she is always associated. And “El viaje de Carol” examines the Spanish Civil War in relation to what is most important to the main protagonist of the film which is her journey into adulthood.
