El sobre verde

El sobre verde Teatro de la Zarzuela

El sobre verde is a two-act sainete with touches of revue—a musical spectacle set both in the working-class Madrid of a century ago and in the skyscraper-filled New York of the same era. The music is by Francisco Guerrero, with the original script written by Enrique Paradas and Joaquín Jiménez. In its time, the piece was a tremendous success, and this version offers a fresh take for younger audiences (and not-so-young ones too). El sobre verde is a comic musical celebration, full of songs, dance, and humor. But in this new version, it also invites a brief yet powerful reflection on the idea of Fortune. In these hyperconnected, tech-driven times, where screens mediate our lives, where money seems to rule the world, where having matters more than being, and where appearances, ‘likes’, brand names, and bank balances seem to outweigh friendship, loyalty, or justice—Nicanor’s fable, his rise and fall from the lowest to the highest and back again, leaves us with a bittersweet aftertaste. It compels us to ask ourselves: what would we do if we found the green envelope?
