Dialogue on Chinese diaspora identities in the Western world
Join us for an inclusive session in English, open to all, in which we will explore issues of identity, culture and diverse global experiences. Led by Dr Alba del Pozo García, Professor of Spanish at the University of Leeds, this session will focus on the concept of ‘People from here, people from there’, delving into the experiences of Chinese communities across Europe, in particular the Qingtians in the Zhejiang region. We will examine hybrid identities, the intersections between culture and belonging, and the complexities of navigating multiple cultural landscapes.
Quan Zhou, writer, illustrator and podcaster, will also join us to offer her insights on culture clashes, transnational identity and anti-racism. A prolific author, she has written books such as Bittersweet Gazpacho and People from Here, People from There, which combine humour, graphic narrative and a profound reflection on migration and intercultural coexistence. Quan has lectured in cities around the world and, in 2024, became the youngest racialised woman and the first to hold the Honorary Chair of Spanish Culture at New York University (NYU). She taught the seminar Art and Diversity in the Peripheries and curated public programmes celebrating the diverse voices of Spanish culture. Her work combines art, communication and activism, making her a leading figure in debates on hybrid cultural dynamics.
