An intercultural dialogue through the graphic novel. A conversation with Quan Zhou Quan Zhou

Quan Zhou, graphic novelist and author, among other things, of the successful saga of autobiographical inspired Gazpacho Agridulce (Sweet and Sour Gazpacho), is visiting Leeds to give a talk in English, which is open to everyone, in which she will reflect on multiculturalism from a personal point of view and talk about her way of understanding the graphic novel as a means of highlighting this question.


Throughout her graphic novels, Quan Zhou -a second generation Spaniard from a Chinese background- depicts her experiences of mixed identity through comics to raise awareness about misguided stereotypes. Zhou's talk will be the highlight of a day’s visit to students on Spanish courses at the University of Leeds, with whom she will carry out various activities around her work and hold several meetings throughout the day.

Quan Zhou (Algeciras, 1989) is an author, illustrator, graphic novelist and commentator. She studied in Madrid and graduated in England. She has published vignettes in the digital version of El País and collaborated in the programme Hoy empieza todo on Radio 3. In 2015 she made her debut with her first graphic novel, Gazpacho agridulce. Una autobiografía chino-andaluza, in Astiberri. In 2017 she also published with Astiberri its sequel, Andaluchinas por el mundo. Gazpacho agridulce 2, and in 2018 together with Nuria Labari, El gran libro de los niños extraordinarios appeared, this time with the publishing company Silonia. Her latest work is Gente de aquí, gente de allí (Astiberri, 2020). Quan Zhou has also given lectures on racism and identity in Spain, the United States, Sweden, China and Taiwan.
