Traditional Dances from Jalisco, México, by Magaly Flores
The Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK dance group will be in charge of opening the Hispanic Cultural Day at the University of Bradford's Language Centre. The choreographer, teacher and leader of the group, Magaly Flores, will join this afternoon to offer a presentation on Mexican folklore and traditions. She will focus on the customs of the Jalisco region, and after her presentation, in which she will also show us some typical crafts and dresses from the area, Magaly will offer us two regional dances from Jalisco, a Jarabe and a Son.
Jalisco is located in western Mexico. The Son is the most representative genre of Mexican music. It has its origin in some Spanish dances, and today it is danced and played in almost every state of the republic. Jarabe is the choreographic lyrical genre that for several decades of the 19th century constituted the archetype of music in Mexico. Likewise the Son, it is one of the most popular dances in Mexico.
Magaly Flores was born in Coyuca de Catalán, Guerrero, Mexico. She is a qualified art teacher in Mexico, specializing in Contemporary Dance and Education and is a Spanish and dance teacher in the UK. After finishing her degree, she joined the Dance Research Center, which researched and helped revive and protect the culture of many regional folk dances throughout Mexico. Upon moving to the UK, Magaly founded Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK in 2016. Magaly's main goal as Artistic Director is for new generations of Mexicans in the UK to learn about and be proud of their Mexican traditions and language.
Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK was founded in 2016 as a dance company proud to promote the traditional dances of the beautiful Aztec country. The colorful performances of Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK, directed by choreographer and teacher Magaly Flores and made up of Mexican dancers residing in Manchester, United Kingdom, give a good account of the diversity and richness of Mexican folklore, collecting the most representative popular dances from different regions of the United States of Mexico. Colibri's vibrant performances have been enjoyed by thousands at events including, for example, Manchester Days 2017-19, Wahaca Day of the Dead, Manchester International Day, Mexican Independence Day, Liverpool Central Library, Glasgow Skypark, Edge Hill University Arts Centre, Durham University Symposium, University of Birmingham, Instituto Cervantes, Manchester Central Library and many more.
