Sacromonte, los sabios de la tribu
For 200 hundred years, the Granada neighbourhood of Sacromonte has been one of the cradles of Flamenco and an unmissable cultural reference in international tourism. It has seen the birth of some of the best artist and it is a must for travelers who usually will visit their famous ‘cuevas’ (caves) to enjoy a Zambra (a flamenco show originated there). Until the beginning of the 1960’s, approximately 4,000 gypsies lived in this neighbourhood, and were all linked with the art of Flamenco in one way or another. The Sacromonte has been for a long time a permanent school in which this art has been passed on from one generation to the next, from parents to their sons. This art has been the soul of the neighbourhood, a means to express themselves culturally and a livelihood.
