On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, discover how Las ovejas no pierden el tren (Álvaro Fernández Armero, 2014) redefines the romantic comedy to tackle the paradoxes of love and daily life during Spain's economic crisis. Far from mere escapism, this underrated genre offers a sharp, ironic lens on the tensions between urban ambition and rural nostalgia, all while exploring the fragile pursuit of human connection in uncertain times.

Thanks to our guest speaker, Dr Matthew Hilborn, Research Fellow at University College Dublin (UCD) we’ll also unpack the commodification of Valentine’s Day, juxtaposing its glossy ideals with the film’s refreshingly candid take on romance and resilience.

After the screening, join us for a lively Q&A to explore how the romantic comedy continues to innovate, challenge, and provoke.

Synopsis: Luisa and Alberto move out to the country to have their second child in an idyllic spot, even though the price to pay is the most apathetic sex imaginable after six years of marriage. Someone who has no intention of setting foot in the country side is Juan, Alberto’s brother who is going out with Natalia, a young woman twenty years his junior who he sees as a lifesaver despite the crazy things kids her age do. And Luisa´s sister, Sarah, is used to channeling her anxiety through men who neve rquite work out until Paco appears, a sports journalist who even seems ready to take her hand at the altar. Or that’s what she thinks.
