Flamenco (2)
Immerse in the wonderful world of flamenco in this 10 weeks workshop with an introduction of the ida y vuelta styles such as guajiras and rumbas.
Cantes de ida y vuelta refers to a group of flamenco musical forms or palos with diverse musical features. Those palos travelled back from Latin America (mainly Cuba) to Spain as styles that, having originated in the interplay between Spanish musical traditions and those of the African slaves and Native Americans, developed into new forms. Usually they have a more mellow character than the more traditional flamenco songs.
Guajiras, or punto cubano, was probably the first ida y vuelta style to be incorporated into flamenco, in the second half of the 19th century, although its golden age was the period known as ópera flamenca (1922–1956).
The style of Afro-Cuban origin rumbas has a lively 4/4 rhythm still very reminiscent of its Cuban origin. The style had been more or less marginal in the flamenco artists' repertoires, but reached enormous popularity after the decades of the 60s and 70s when it was adopted by Catalan gypsies like Antonio González El Pescaílla and Peret.
We also will include some Sevillanas if the participants show an interest in learning this style of dance.
Continuation of the 2017 winter workshop. New students and all levels welcome.
