Así en la guerra como en la paz, by Luis García Jambrina

Así en la guerra como en la paz, by Luis García Jambrina Instituto Cervantes

We are very excited about this project at the Dámaso Alonso Library: a club that allows you to discuss your favourite books in Spanish in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We meet once a month to talk about a book previously chosen by the club.

The session in November —dedicated to the book Así en la Guerra como en la paz, by Luis García Jambrina— will be very special because we will be honoured by the presence of the author, Luis García Jambrina, who will chat with TUD Hispanist Pilar Molina, as well as with the public.

Así en la guerra como en la paz is set in the background of the Spanish War of Independence against the French, in the cold winter of 1808-1809. The British army under Sir John Moore, sent to aid the Spanish cause, is forced to withdraw by Napoleon's troops. Catherine Gallagher, the Irish wife of an infantry soldier, tells that tragic retreat through the lands of Zamora, León and Galicia and gives voice to the forgotten women of that time, those who accompanied  —sometimes together with their children— British troops in the battlefields.

Luis García Jambrina is a doctor in Hispanic Philology and holds a Master's degree in Fiction Screenwriting for TV and Film. He is lecturer of Spanish Literature at the University of Salamanca. As a novelist, he became known for El manuscrito de piedra (2008), awarded with the prestigious Ciudad de Zaragoza International Historical Novel Prize. This was the beginning of a successful series about Fernando de Rojas followed by El manuscrito de nieve (2010), El manuscrito de fuego (2018), El manuscrito de aire (2019), El manuscrito de barro (2021) and El manuscrito de niebla (2022). His last work is Así en la guerra como en la paz (2023). Together with Manuel Menchón, he has written the essay La doble muerte de Unamuno (2021).

We recommend a B2 level in Spanish.

Join us for this session, where we will together squeeze a moving story full of emotion and heroism!
