In Conversation 1. Today's Social Changes

In this first event of the In Conversation series, we invite you to listen to writer, editor and cultural events manager from Bilbao, Iván Repila in conversation with Pascale Baker. Author of four novels, his stories leave no room for indifference and pay special attention to social changes and human behavior, through placing his characters in complex situations. His novel The Boy Who Stole Attila's Horse, fable of two brothers trapped in a well, has been an international success which was translated into Italian, French, English, Korean, Dutch, Romanian, Japanese and Persian. From this book, the late Irish literary critic Eileen Battersby wrote in the Irish Times: … "is high art, an imaginative allegorical work of breathtaking yet restrained lyric power". If in Prólogo para una guerra (Prologue for a War), his third novel, Repila presented another fable, this time around social movements, in his newly published novel El aliado (The Ally), humorously presents a provoking story about feminism and the role that men should play within the movement.

Iván Repila (Bilbao, 1978) has worked for various national and international organizations and institutions in the production, coordination and management of conferences, meetings and theatre, music and dance festivals.

Pascale Baker is a Lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD. Her main research interest is in banditry in Latin American literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day.
