Literature demands that we go out in search of treasure — words, languages, imaginary universes — and embark on perilous ventures with unforeseen dangers. We welcome two pairs of writers and translators, who will speak to us of the risks, responsibilities, pleasures and rewards of their endeavours in literary creation.
Artists short biographies:
Nuria Barrios is a writer, translator and Doctor of Philosphy. She has published poetry, novels and essays, and her short stories are present in numerous anthologies. She is the Spanish translator of the Irish novelist John Banville/Benjamin Black. Her last book, La impostora, an essay on translation, has been awarded with the Premio Málaga de Ensayo.
John Banville is an Irish novelist, screenwriter, playwright and book reviewer. . His novels include the recently published April in Spain and the forth coming The Singularities. He was awarded the Man Booker Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award.
Alonso Cueto is a Peruvian writer, author of twenty books, including novels, essays and short stories. It has been translated into sixteen languages. In English has published The Wind Traveler and The Blue Hour. Three of his novels have been adapted for film.
Frank Wynne is an Irish translator from French and Spanish with more than twenty years of experience as literary translator. He has translated two books by Peruvian author Alonso Cueto (The Blue Hour, The Wind Traveller) and The Art of Losing by Alice Zeniter, among others.
Laura Linares is a lecturer at the University of Limerick, working on literary translation in non-hegemonic cultures. Her forthcoming monograph (Legenda, 2023) is entitled Translation Landscapes: Contemporary Galician Fiction in English.
