The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity, 1869–1939

As part of The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity, 1869–1939, Instituto Cervantes is proud to spotlight a remarkable group of Hispanic artists—many of whom remain little known in the United States—whose works contribute powerful perspectives to the exhibition’s global narrative. These include Benjamín de la Calle (Colombia), María Izquierdo (Mexico), Manuel Rodríguez Lozano (Mexico), Roberto Montenegro (Mexico), Gabriel Morcillo (Spain), Gregorio Prieto (Spain), and Emilio Baz Viaud (Mexico). The exhibition also benefits from international collaboration, including loans and curatorial partnerships with the Museo de Arte de Lima (Peru), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Santiago, Chile), and the Museo Gregorio Prieto (Spain)—underscoring the critical role Latin American and Spanish institutions play in shaping a more inclusive global understanding of queer history through visual culture.
