Josep Aurel

Winner of the César, France’s answer to the Oscars, for Best Animated Feature, French illustrator and artist Aurel’s feature debut brings to life a little-known chapter of the Spanish Civil War —the incarceration of thousands of Republican refugees in concentration camps across France— through the eyes and pencil of Catalan artist Josep Bartolí (in the voice of Sergi López). Shot in Cinemascope using a 2D animation process, Aurel adopts a wide variety of graphic styles to represent each of the eras and locations depicted in the film, from the harsh conditions in those camps to Josep’s love affair with Frida Kahlo. Josep is a prime example of the diverse stories the medium of animation is capable of telling.
