International Voices Project
Since 2010, the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago has served as co-organizer and host of the International Voices Project, an initiative that brings contemporary international playwriting to Chicago through translations and staged readings of works that have not previously been presented in English in the Midwest.
Throughout the month of May, several Chicago theatre companies present plays from different countries, often performed by bilingual casts that move between English and the original language of the text. The program fosters encounters among playwrights, translators, and theatre professionals, while offering audiences the opportunity to discover new voices in international drama.
Each reading is followed by a conversation with the participating artists, providing insight into the translation process and the cultural context of the works. In a city shaped by cultural diversity, the project positions theatre as a space for dialogue between languages and theatrical traditions.
