At the 40th edition of the Goya Awards, the Spanish Film Academy has bestowed the Goya Honorary Award on Gonzalo Suárez, in recognition of the career of this singular and essential figure in Spanish cinema. To mark this distinction and as a tribute to his work, we present this film series, featuring four films selected by the filmmaker himself, which will be screened on the Instituto Cervantes’ Vimeo channel.

Gonzalo Suárez is one of the most distinctive and unclassifiable creators in Spanish cinema. His work moves between fantasy, metacinematic reflection, and ironic humor, consistently challenging the narrative and aesthetic conventions of contemporary filmmaking. A journalist, novelist, and filmmaker, Suárez has built a unique creative universe in which identity is fragmented, characters split and double, and reality merges with fiction in an unsettling yet deeply poetic way.

His filmography—from Ditirambo (1967) to Remando al viento (1988) and beyond—reveals a constant commitment to exploring imagination as a driving creative force, free from fashions, movements, or predetermined genres. His cinema is a space for play and reflection, a labyrinth of literary and cultural references where humor coexists with melancholy and a critical gaze is exercised with subtlety.

Recipient of distinctions such as the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, the National Film Award, and the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, Suárez has been celebrated both in Spain and internationally. His legacy is that of a free-spirited artist who conceived cinema as an act of continual invention and as a constant exploration of the limits of perception and storytelling.
