Celebration of World Book and Copyright Day with continued reading of Don Quixote © Instituto Cervantes

World Book and Copyright Day On April 23, 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Also on 23 April, other eminent writers such as Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla or Manuel Mejía Vallejo were born - or died. For this reason, this date so symbolic for universal literature was chosen by the General Conference of UNESCO to pay a worldwide tribute to the book and its authors, and encourage everyone, particularly the youngest, to discover the pleasure of reading and respect the irreplaceable contribution of creators to social and cultural progress. In 1995, it was approved to proclaim on April 23 of each year the "World Book and Copyright Day". On April 23 it coincides with Sant Jordi - Saint George, patron of Germany, Aragon, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, England, Lebanon, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Mexico. It is traditional to give a rose at the end of a reading, event or pregón and that the loved ones exchange a rose and a book. To celebrate this day, the uninterrupted reading of Don Quixote will be developed over the course of six hours in the library of the Cervantes Institute in Chicago. If you are interested in participating you can reserve your space for reading in the Cervantes Institute library in Chicago. The Circle of Fine Arts of Madrid will carry out the XXIII Continuous Reading of the Quixote, and they can follow the retransmission of the reading through Radio Círculo in and of its website.
