About the cookbook:
Beyond the Wall is not just another cook book destined to collect dust inside a mahogany cabinet nor is it a self-improvement book pontificating on how you should live your life. This is a book of truth and hope. In it, you will find the amazing life stories of twenty Latino immigrants who have raced to the top of the culinary world along a less than perfect path to success. Authors Esmeralda Castelan and Guadalupe Tovar have chronicled the inspirational journeys of men and women who know they are a diamond in the rough—and who put forth the hard work and ingenuity to dig themselves out from the harshest of circumstances: from prejudice to poverty, abuse to loneliness. Experience the anguish and triumph of each as they bring their journeys—and recipes—from cities throughout Latin America straight to your home and table. Without question, Beyond the Wall is sure to influence the next generation of chefs, entrepreneurs, and leaders to take a leap of faith in making their dreams come true. As you savor these stories and welcome these recipes into your home, remember this is much more than food being stirred in a pot. It is about memories, tears, agony, and the courage of people who believed in a life beyond what they were born into. We encourage you to take these stories-OUR stories- and make them YOUR stories, these right here, are the real stories behind America the great one dish at a time.
