Rendezvous with cinema: "To the women of Spain. María Lejárraga" Instituto Cervantes

The virtual film club Cita con el cine dedicates its October session to the film A las mujeres de España. María Lejárraga, by Laura Hojman, a filmmaker from Seville who has dedicated her two previous films to two great figures of Spanish literature, Rubén Darío and Antonio Machado.

This documentary, nominated for the three major national film awards (the Feroz, the Forqué and the Goya), is a delicate work on the recovery of historical memory. It is not only a tribute to the writer and pioneer of feminism in Spain, but also the chronicle of a historical moment, led by a group of brilliant and courageous women who wanted to build a better future and whose dreams of progress were dashed when the Spanish Civil War broke out.

Synopsis: The plays of María Lejárraga (1874-1974) were written under he name of her husband, the theatre impresario Gregorio Martínez Sierra. The most prolific Spanish playwright of all time, author of works such as Canción de cuna (made into a film five times) and the libretto for Falla's El amor brujo, she was a member of parliament in the second Spanish Republic, as well as the founder of pioneering projects for women's rights and freedoms.

The activity is moderated by staff from the Cervantes Institute and includes the participation of specialists linked to he making of the film (filmmakers, scriptwriters…). Enjoy cinema in Spanish!
