Creative Writing Workshop

As part of Festival Cervantes Writing Art, Venezuelan writer Israel Centeno will facilitate a writing workshop in Spanish.

The workshop will consist of the following:

1. How to write a captivating beginning of a story

2. How to keep a reader engaged throughout a story

3. Understanding the difference between events and a story

4. Developing characters

5. How to introduce an idea in a story in a simple way

6. The movement of a story and how it relates to structure

7. Introducing complex information and developing greater reader interest

8. How to show and not tell

9. The 5 best types of conflict and how they strengthen a story or plot

10. Introducing information that does not halt action

11. The difference between dialogue and conversation

12. The effective transition between scenes

13. Plot and story line

14. Some examples of the dos and don’ts of writing stories

Israel Centeno – Born in Caracas in 1958. He is one of the most prominent Venezuelan writers since the change of century and one of the most interesting voices of Latin America. A prestigious and published editor, poet and writer.  Some of his work includes Calletania (Monte Ávila, 1992. CONAC Prize), Creatures of the Night (Alfaguara Venezuela, 2000) and Bengala (Norma Venezuela, 2005).In 1996, Venezuelan publishing company Planeta published two of Centeno´s novels in one volume, The Comet´s string and Other Initiations. Both novels received the Bienal de Guayana Prize in 1994 and have created an occult following for new generations of Latin American writers.
