Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez "The Oral Tradition in Latin America"

Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez will give a talk at the Oralidad festival, organized by the Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque, entitled The Oral Tradition in Latin America. Another way of telling stories. Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez (California, 1966) is a Chicano storyteller, academic, and former associate professor at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches classes about the Mexican-American border culture, Chicano culture, and creative writing. He has taught in colleges in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. He was a Fullbright grantee in Spain, Turkey, and Poland. His books include Algún día te cuento las cosas que he visto (2012), published in English in 2015, Luego el silencio (2014), and En el Lost ‘n ’Found (2016). His most recent works are a chapbook with photos and stories on his travels around Turkey titled Yabanci [Foreigner] Extranjero (2019) and the novel Nocturno de frontera (2020). His stories have been published in anthologies and literary magazines in Spain, Italy, Mexico, and the United States. He has talked about writing in Spanish in the United Stated with Eduardo Halfón and Daniel Alarcón for the magazine The Believer, as well as the manifestations of nationalism and globalization in contemporary literature with Santiago Roncagliolo and Edmundo Paz Soldán for the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies.
