El Romancero: Ballads from Spain to New Mexico

El Romancero: Ballads from Spain to New Mexico Tomás Lozano.

Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque, in collaboration with the Town of Bernalillo’s Martha Lieber Public Library is pleased to present a lecture and book signing by Catalan music scholar and performer Tomás Lozano, entitled, El Romancero: Ballads From Spain to New Mexico. The event will take place on Sunday, October 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the library.

El Romancero is the traditional corpus of early Spanish folk ballads (romances) celebrating themes of battle, honor, love, and courtship. These compressed, dramatic narratives, sung to a tune, made their way into the New World and have stood the test of time.

Barceloní musicologist, performer, and author Tomás Lozano is known for his refined musicianship. His performances of Spain’s traditional ballads have been described as iconic. Lozano also performs original settings of classic Spanish poetry, accompanying himself on the guitar or hurdy-gurdy (his instrument of predilection) in the grand manner of Spain’s ancient trovadores.
