The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer
In 1999, acclaimed Argentine photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti met two inseparable cousins, Guillermina Aranciaga and Belinda Stutz, living in the farmlands outside Buenos Aires. She recorded and photographed them for over 25 years. The result of their collaboration—a series of photo books and exhibitions titled “The Adventures of Guille and Belinda”—pictured the best friends in stylized dream-like tableaux, capturing their spirit of youthful make-believe.
Now, Sanguinetti’s evocative feature documentary brings the project to the screen, tracing the girls’ lives across the decades in real-time sequences. The film’s first half, composed of videotaped footage immersing the viewer in their childhood games of dress-up and adolescent wonder, eventually gives way to the sober realities of womanhood in rural Argentina. Nostalgic, patient, and profound, The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer is a captivating meditation on the passage of time and the enduring power of female intimacy.
