The Grapes of Exile: Alhameños en Brooklyn (1918-2018)

The Grapes of Exile: Alhameños en Brooklyn (1918-2018) Maria Dueñas

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT
A century ago, a crisis in the grape industry generated a substantial current of emigration from the town of Alhama de Almería to the city of New York.  Scores of families from the town ended up living in a tight-knit community that developed within just a few square blocks of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. The journalist Almudena Ariza, the novelist María Dueñas, and NYU professor James D. Fernández will explore this phenomenon from the points of view of journalism, literature and history, in dialogue with descendants of this unknown chapter of the invisible story of Spaniards in the US.  What is left today of that diaspora?
