The Instituto Cervantes launches the “Encuentros” series with a conversation between the Spanish writer and journalist Daniel Gascón and the American essayist and analyst David Rieff. This dialogue is part of the program of activities organized around the exhibition Falsified News. The power of lies.
Under the title “Memory, intoxication and oblivion”, the talk will address key issues about historical memory, the manipulation of the past and the impact of revisionism in different societies. Drawing on Rieff's studies and experiences, countries such as the Balkans, Ireland, Argentina, South Africa, Spain, Russia and Ukraine will be discussed, analyzing how their memory policies have been shaped by war, conflict and disinformation.
In addition, the role of historical revisionism and the decolonial gaze will be explored, putting into context the current challenges around the dissemination of fake news and polarized narratives. Both Gascón and Rieff, from their experience as journalists and writers, will offer a critical and reflective perspective on the construction and political use of memory in contemporary society.
