Literature, Feminism & Art carmen Boullosa

Internationalli acclaimed Mexican writer Carmen Boullosa and professor Raquel Chan-Rodríguez will discuss the attitudes towards artistic, creation, money, social institutions, notions of Modernity and "Primitivism" reflected in Bargas Llosa's El paraíso en la otra esquina. This novel revolves around two non-fictional characters, Peruvian Flora Tristán-- who has been called the first feminist of the Americas-- and her grandson, French painter Paul Gauguin. The seminar will examine Flora Tristán's memoirs, Peregrinaciones de una paria (1838), and it will explore some of Gauguin's paintings. It will aldo look art vargas Llosa's approach to narrative strategy as presented in his essays on the art of the Novel.
