Fabelo. Critical States

Fabelo. Critical States Roberto Fabelo

The Instituto Cervantes in New York presents the exhibition “Fabelo. Critical States”, a selection of works by renowned Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo, curated by Mario José Hernández. The group invites visitors to immerse themselves in a disturbing universe, where the real and the fantastic coexist in an unstable balance.

“Estados críticos” (Critical States) is a series that stems from the ‘Fragmentos vitales’, key pieces that today are part of the collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba. In this exhibition of works on kraft paper they dialogue with figures that emerge as symbols of resistance, chaos or transformation. The use of kraft paper, with its irregular textures and expressive charge, refers to Goya's radical gesture with his etchings: a need to expand, to break with the more solemn formats of painting. Fabelo cuts the support randomly, exposes its accidents, and turns these imperfections into part of the visual language.

Through his drawings and paintings, Fabelo creates a singular iconography populated by hybrid creatures, mutant bodies and dreamlike scenes, where beauty coexists with restlessness. His work, loaded with symbolism, opens up as a critical territory that challenges both the viewer and his time.

Roberto Fabelo (Camagüey, 1950) is one of Cuba's most important contemporary artists. His work, which encompasses painting, sculpture and illustration, has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Inspired by Goya and the literature of magical realism, his work is distinguished by its technical virtuosity and his ability to narrate visual stories that oscillate between the fantastic and the grotesque.
