On the occasion of the New York premiere of "Carmen" by the Compañía Nacional de Danza at the Joyce Theatre we will talk with Joaquín de Luz, director of the company.
Joaquín de Luz is a Spanish ballet dancer. He was formerly with the American Ballet Theatre, and a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. He is currently director of Spanish National Dance Company.
The ballet "Carmen" was created for the Compañía Nacional de Danza in 2015 by the prestigious Swedish choreographer Johan Inger. When Johan
Inger was asked to create a new version of Carmen, being himself Swedish and
Carmen a piece with a strong Spanish nature, he faced an enormous challenge.
But it was also a great opportunity. The story witnessed through the eyes of a
young watcher reveals the tale stripped to its mythic and universal elements of
passion and violence.
"Carmen" has received enthusiastic reviews in Spain and internationally and will continue on tour with the CND.
