Thinking of him

Thinking of him Pensando en él

To commemorate the birth of Rabindranath Tagore on May 7th, the New Delhi center will hold a screening of the film Thinking of Him, about the great Indian poet. The relationship between the Hispanic world and India has a common link in poetry. Zenobia Camprubí's dedication to translation made it possible for Juan Ramón Jiménez to learn about the work of the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore from a very early age. Zenobia was in charge of the translation of Tagore's poems for a long time and Juan Ramón took care of the rhythm and aesthetics. Thanks to her, the work of the Bengali poet, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, became known in Spain and Latin America.

Pablo César, the Argentine director and producer of this fascinating film, has recreated the encounters  between Tagore and the famous Argentine writer Victoria Ocampo based on their real-life story. Tagore had to stop in Buenos Aires to receive medical treatment before he went to Peru to attend the centenary of independence celebrations. Victoria found out and offered to take care of him. She mortgaged her jewelry to rent a beautiful mansion in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires, and there she hosted Tagore. From the balcony one could see the wide River Plate, which looked like a sea, and a large garden with tall trees and flower plants. Tagore left Buenos Aires on January 3, 1925 after fully recovering from his illness.

When she received the news of Tagore's death, Ocampo sent a telegram to Tagore's son that read simply "Pensando en el" (thinking of him). That's where the name of this Argentine film came from. After the screening there will be a round table that will be moderated by Murtaza Ali (film critic) and will feature the participation of the Hispanist Prof. Shyama Prasad Ganguly, the Director of the Center Òscar Pujol, the producer of the film Suraj Kumar and the Head of  the Consular Section of the Argentine Embassy in New Delhi, Marcelo Boffi.
