It represents a cross between Italian neorealism and black cinema from Hollywood in the 1950s. The film, considered one of the absolute classics of Spanish cinema, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Cinematography Award from the Circle of Cinematographic Writers that same year.
