Unveiling the Spanish Gallery
The Instituto Cervantes Manchester presents a new session of "Hispanglia: the Traces of Spain in the United Kingdom," coordinated by Professor Duncan Wheeler (University of Leeds), where we will explore the Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland.
How and why did one of the finest private collections of Spanish Golden Age art end up in the North East of England? Officially opened in 2021 by Prince Charles and the Queen of Spain, the Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland is the UK´s first gallery dedicated exclusively to the culture, history and art of Spain. The collection includes works by Velázquez, Murillo, El Greco and Zurbarán. In conversation with curator Morlin Ellis, Duncan Wheeler will explore the history of the collection, the response from visitors thus far and plans for the future.
