The Spanish Civil War in the British Memory: talking with Dolores and Gideon Long

The Spanish Civil War in the British Memory: talking with Dolores and Gideon Long IC Manchester

In March, our library hosts a talk about British memories of the Spanish Civil War, based on one family's personal story.

Dolores Long, daughter of Sam and Bessie Wild, has worked in education in the UK and with the British Council in Tanzania, Egypt, Bangladesh and Cambodia. She is presently a member of the Executive Committee of the International Brigade Memorial Trust and the North West International Brigade Memorial Group.

Dolores will be joined in remembering their parents' legacy by Gideon Long, a journalist and correspondent in Spain, Chile, and Colombia, and Sam and Bessie Wild's grandson, who has traced the journey made by his grandfather during his time in the Spanish Civil War.

Their testimony will bring us closer to the city of Manchester's involvement with Spain during that moment in history, and to the personal journey of Sam Wild, a Manchester worker who joined the International Brigades, and Bessie Wild, who actively participated in the public mobilisation in support of Spain.

We look forward to seeing you at the library!
