The virtual film club, Cita con el cine (Appointment with Cinema), concludes its 2025 programme with one of the masterpieces of classic Spanish cinema,

El verdugo, (The Executioner) directed by the award-winning director Luis García Berlanga.

In this 1963 black comedy, Berlanga, with his typical irony, challenges Francoist society, humorously criticising situations of the time.

Synopsis

José Luis, a young undertaker working at a prison, meets an executioner named Amadeo, who will soon be retiring. When he returns the briefcase with the professional tools that Amadeo had forgotten, he also meets his daughter Carmen, whom no one has wanted to marry for fear of being related to her father. The couple quickly hit it off, and after being caught by the old man in a compromising situation with his daughter, José Luis is forced to marry her.
