Spanish General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Study Morning: La lengua de las mariposas HOME Manchester

Come along to our Spanish GCSE Study Morning, led by Carmen Herrero, Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University, and in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Manchester.

This study morning will include a screening of the film La lengua de las mariposas and will address themes of friendship, education, culture and will include some contextual information about the Spanish civil war.

The film will be introduced in English, key vocabulary and contextual information will be provided. The screening will be followed, after a lunch break, by a series of Spanish exercises based on the film, where students can engage in Spanish culture, language and film outside of the classroom.

Synopsis: A poignant drama about the developing friendship between a young boy and his Republican teacher, cut short by the onset of the Civil War. Spring, 1936. Inspirational teacher Don Gregorio (Fernán-Gomez) believes that the fields and forests of Galicia can teach his young students as much as the books in their classroom. Eight-year-old Moncho (Lozana) learns about nature, poetry and above all integrity, from his kindly maestro. But this charmed existence will be smashed forever by the outbreak of war. Beautifully shot and directed by Cuerda (also producer for Alejandro Amenábar), the essence of the film can be found in Azcona’s interweaving adaptation of Manuel Rivas’ stories (from ¿Qué me quieres, amor?) and in the pivotal performances of the veteran actor and the amazing youngster, in his cinematic début.
