Mexico: Heritage & Folkdance María Flores

We invite you to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with an event that shows Mexican heritage and folklore through a performance by Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK, directed by choreographer Magaly Flores, that will showcase the most representative dances from various Mexican states.

The event will begin with an introduction by architect Sara Uruchurtu Cruz, who will speak about the importance of Mexican heritage related to Independence Day celebrations.

Sara Uruchurtu Cruz is a Mexican-British architect currently based in Manchester. With over 20 years of professional experience, she has collaborated with high-profile architectural firms in both Mexico and the United Kingdom, contributing to award-winning projects.

Sara graduated from the School of Architecture and Design at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City. She continued her studies with a Master's in Restoration and Conservation of Architectural Monuments at the National Institute of Anthropology and History. She has been involved in significant rehabilitation and conservation projects at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mexico, and since 2004, she has been based in the United Kingdom.

Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK are an established dance troupe of native Mexicans showcasing traditional Mexican dance throughout the north-west of England and beyond. They are very proud to promote the traditional dances of their beautiful country. Since its foundation in 2016, Colibrí’s vibrant performances have been enjoyed by thousands of people at events including five Manchester Days and Manchester International Day. The group has performed for the Mexican consulate and Ambassador to the UK in Durham and London, Central Manchester Library, Liverpool Library, Birmingham University, Edge Hill University, Instituto Cervantes, the British Library in London and many more.

Magaly Flores, Colibrí’s Artistic Director, was born in Coyuca de Catalan, Guerrero, Mexico. She is a qualified art teacher in Mexico, specialising in dance education. She has a degree in Education from Edge Hill University, and is a member of the International Dance Council (CID), International Council of Organisations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF) and IIDDMAC, which investigates and helps resurrect, promote and preserve the culture of many regional folk dances across Mexico.
