El Desborde.
Instituto Cervantes Manchester and Flamenco de Leeds are pleased to present "Flamenco...El Desborde," a musical performance featuring two dancers, a singer, and a guitarist. The show pays tribute to the women of flamenco and delves into the world of cabaret and exhibitionism from a contemporary perspective. The performance references iconic figures of flamenco and copla, such as Lola Flores, Miguel de Molina, and Dolores Vargas "La Terremoto."
Exploring the roots of flamenco and flamenco singing, while also challenging them, this performance offers a unique approach by engaging the audience and immersing them in the musical imagination of flamenco. It draws inspiration from the women who have contributed to this art form throughout history and the challenges they have faced, creating a rich and captivating tapestry of personalities and styles.
"Flamenco singing has become an aspect of stories that I have chosen to revisit today to draw a parallel with the current context and reveal the relevance of the historical issues faced by women, which persist despite the passage of time, evolution, and the development of this 'collective memory.’"
Cathy Sandoval, a Chilean dancer and choreographer, is recognized for her educational work at the "La Plazuela" Flamenco Art Academy and for her development as a traditional flamenco performer in theaters and tablaos. She has performed on major stages in Chile, Spain, Canada, and Argentina, sharing the stage with great figures. She is the founder of the contemporary flamenco company "El Rito" (2015), with which she has created the works "Tierra" and "Soy," a project that features collaboration with renowned artists such as Ana Morales, Guadalupe Torres, Florencia Oz, and Concha Jareño.
Natalia García-Huidobro, a Chilean choreographer and dancer based in Spain, trained in Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Through her creations, Natalia has developed a very personal line of contemporary flamenco, confronting tradition and opening up the structures of this language in collaboration with artists from different disciplines. This has allowed her to enrich La Típica (the company she has directed since 2000) with new forms of flamenco. Some of her main works as an artistic director include El Arrebato, Our Prayer, La Extranjera, Memorias del Viento, Acuérdate de mí…Lola, Silencio, and A ras de Tierra. As a performer, Natalia has collaborated with various visual artists and prominent musicians and artists. Her latest collaboration with director Lemi Ponifasio, Love to Death, has stood out and been highly notable at the festivals in which they have participated.
The evening will also feature Carlos Lobo, a flamenco singer, and Jorge Bravo, a guitarist.
