Clive James and Rafael Juárez: a poetic dialogue across language
Clive James (1939-2019) and Rafael Juárez (1956-2019) died in the autumn of 2019. Both were well respected poets in their respective countries, Australia and Spain. Both published two books posthumously: Fin de fiesta: Últimos poemas [End of the Party: Last Poems] (2021) and Todas las despedidas [All the Farewells] (2020). Drawing on different literary traditions, James and Juárez dealt with similar themes such as the passing of time, memory and death. In this literary event, the poet Adalber Salar and the academic Luis Castellví will explore the common ground between both authors.
About the panelist
Adalber Salas Hernández is a poet, essayist and translator. He is the author of several books of poems, such as: Salvoconducto (XXXVI Arcipreste de Hita Prize; Valencia, Pre-Textos, 2015), Mínimos (Madrid, Amargord Ediciones, 2016), and La ciencia de las despedidas (Valencia, Pre-Textos, 2018). He has also published a volume of essays on Venezuelan poetry, Clarice Lispector: el lugar de la poesía (Santiago de Chile, Ril Editores, 2019), and Palabras sin dueño. Variaciones sobre la traducción literaria (Mexico City, Dirección de Literatura UNAM / Periódico de Poesía, 2019).
Luis Castellví Laukamp is a Lecturer in Spanish Cultural Studies at The University of Manchester. His teaching and research interests range widely, but mainly focus on the literatures of early modern Spain, Latin America and the Philippines. Central to his academic work are the theories and practices of poetic influence and transmission of culture in the early modern Hispanic world. Author of Hispanic Baroque Ekphrasis: Góngora, Camargo, Sor Juana (2020) and editor-translator of Fin de fiesta: Últimos poemas (2021), a bilingual anthology of Clive James’ late poetry.
