Avant-garde, Jaleo, and Duende: Spanish Music in the 21st Century

Avant-garde, Jaleo, and Duende: Spanish Music in the 21st Century Editorial de la Universidad de Guadalajara

Within the event series Territorios del Hispanismo (Territories of Hispanism), the Instituto Cervantes in Los Angeles is proud to host a public conversation between two major figures in Spanish-language music journalism, Betto Arcos and Enrique Blanc, around the theme Avant-garde, Jaleo, and Duende: Spanish Music in the 21st Century, also the title of the recently published book co-edited by Blanc for the University of Guadalajara Press, in collaboration with REDPEM.IB (Ibero-American Network of Music Journalists).

This volume offers a carefully curated selection of 25 key artists in contemporary Spanish music, such as Rosalía, Nacho Vegas, C. Tangana, Love of Lesbian, Soleá Morente, Niño de Elche, Baiuca, and Zahara, who represent a wide range of genres including regional folk, singer-songwriter, flamenco, rock, hip-hop, fusion music, and reggaeton influences.

In their talk and discussion with the audience, the speakers will highlight a remarkable phenomenon: the ongoing cultural exchange that connects both sides of the Spanish-speaking Atlantic, revealing the deep musical dialogue shared between Spain and countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Mexico.
