Thinking Iberoamerica: Ana Tijoux

Thinking Iberoamerica: Ana Tijoux Ana Tijoux

What are the concerns of young Latin Americans today? Can hip-hop help them find answers? How important are rappers such as Ana Tijoux?

Celebrated Latin American rapper, Ana Tijoux, will be performing at the Jazz Café on April 26. We are delighted to announce a public interview with Tijoux as part of our cycle "Think Ibero-America", chaired by cultural critic Juan Toledo.

Ana Tijoux is a Chilean singer, MC, lyricist and rap composer. In the late 1990s she gained recognition in Latin America as the female MC of the hip-hop group Makiza following the success of her second solo album of 1977.  She is a feminist and activist. Her songs denounce the failings of society, especially abuse against women. She argues for women's rights and attacks all forms of gender-based violence. She achieved great success in 2014 with her album "Vengo", particularly the song "Antipatriarca". She has toured Latin America, Europe and the United States and, as one of Latin America's leading MCs, has been nominated for a Grammy Award on several occasions.

Juan Toledo is a teacher, translator and cultural critic. He is also a broadcaster, producing and presenting the bilingual cultural podcast Artefacto for the online ZTR Radio which he directs. He is a regular collaborator of various literary and cultural magazines like Azahar Literario y el Ojo de la Cultura and he is editor at large of Perro Negro, a Peruvian interactive magazine produced internationally in three continents. For over 20 years he worked for the Arts Division of the British Council headquarters in London and has participated, presented and produced radio programmes for diverse audiences in countries like Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, France and UK with BBC's Radio 4 and Radio 5 plus the independent Radio Resonance.
