Cervantes Institute, in collaboration with the National Gallery in London, presents Álvaro Longoria's documentary ‘The Sleeper. The Lost Caravaggio’ as part of the 21st edition of the London Spanish Film Festival.
After the screening, the film's director and producer will engage in a discussion with the gallery's Spanish art curator, Daniel Ralston.
Synopsis of ‘The Sleeper. The Lost Caravaggio’: Facing a move, the Pérez de Castro family puts a painting that had been in their dining room for decades up for sale at an auction house. The starting price is 1,500 euros. When antique dealers see the painting in the catalogue, they recognise it as a possible lost Caravaggio. Thus begins an arduous and delicate process of restoration, attribution and sale. More than a documentary, El durmiente is a thriller in which Longoria masterfully sheds light on the dark secrets of the antique art market, without giving away any of its fascinating mystery.
