The Bookshop

The Bookshop null

Adapted by Isabel Coixet from Penelope Fitzgerald's 1978 novel, The Bookshop tells the struggles of a young widow, Florence Green, who, by deciding to open a bookshop in a small English town unchains ruthless opposition from Violet Gamart, a local heavyweight. It also provokes Mr. Brundish to come out of his reclusive life with his books and start a terribly elegant and restrained flirtation game with Florence. An ode to the power of books and a woman's independence of spirit, the unclassifiable Coixet offers an English tale benefiting from the subtle performances of Mortimer, Nighby and Clarkson, now in her third collaboration with the filmmaker. The voice over by Julie Christie and Alfonso de Vilallonga's score, are wonderful final touches to this film, which has won in Spain several awards, among which the Goyas for Best Film as well as Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay to Coixet. The film will be released in UK.
