Talk: Women in Latin American Poetry

The first Latin American writer awarded with the Nobel Prize was a woman, the Chilean Gabriela Mistral. Since then, women have always occupied a prominent place especially in poetry. However, few are the names that resonate with European ears when talking about the poetry of the last 50 years. From Alejandra Pizarnik to the last generations, Benjamin Bollig, Richard Gwyn and Rachel Robinson, three British specialists recover in this new session of the "Authors in search of reader" series some of these outstanding female poets from Latin America.

Comments: About the speakers: Ben Bollig is an academic specialising in Latin American literature and film. A lecturer at the University of Oxford since 2011, he was awarded with the title of Professor of Spanish American Literature in 2016. Bollig completed a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Nottingham and then carried out his master of arts degree (on Latin American Cultural Studies) and doctorate at King's College London, completing a thesis on Argentine literature. After lecturing in London, he spent five years at the University of Leeds (2006–11) and was then elected a tutorial fellow in Spanish at St Catherine's College, Oxford, and as a faculty lecturer in Spanish American Literature. He is also an associate lecturer in Spanish at St John's College, Oxford. In 2016, the University awarded him with the title Professor of Spanish American Literature Richard Gwyn is a Welsh novelist, essayist and poet. He grew up in Crickhowell, Powys, the son of a country doctor and a nurse. Since 2013 he has been Professor of Creative and Critical Writing at Cardiff University. He also translates poetry and short fiction from Spanish and since 2005 has regularly reviewed books for The Independent. In recent years Gwyn has developed his career as a translator of poetry and short fiction by Latin American writers. In 2016 he published The Other Tiger: Recent Poetry from Latin America, which Edith Grossman described as: 'An incisive overview of recent, innovative writing we're not likely to find elsewhere in English. [T]he translations are beautiful and to the point. This is a book that belongs in every library, private or institutional, that has shelf-space for volumes of poetry.' Rachel Robinson, is College Lecturer in Spanish Literature in the Oxford University, specializing in Women, Gender and Society in Latin America, and Poetry of Female Poets of Latin America, mainly in the poetry of Chilean poet Cecilia Vicuña and others.
