Juan Bautista Maíno, a Great Artist at the Spanish Gallery, Bishop Auckland
No Gallery exists outside America dedicated to the Spanish Golden Age. Do we really need one? This lecture will address three things. It will explain why it’s coming about. It will elucidate the extraordinary story of a Nation whose art was drawn from all corners of its empire and welded into something authentically Spanish. It will tell the story of Juan Bautisto Maíno, a corrective to the idea that old Spain gave us Velázquez, El Greco, Murillo and Goya. Jonathan Ruffer is the Founder and Director of the Spanish Gallery at The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland.
