Skies so unlike their own: A celebration of spanish exile in the UK, 1939
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War, which led to the exile of many public intellectuals, academics, artists and writers. Like many other fellow citizens, they had to leave their country behind. While the UK was getting ready for the war effort, many of these Spanish Republican exiles were nonetheless welcome in Britain, just like Spanish Romantic intellectuals had found shelter on British soil in the 19th Century. This memorial programme pays tribute to Spanish Republican exile with conferences, a book launch, a public dialogue, a documentary screening and a concert.
