Sor Juana and the Spanish Baroque

Sor Juana and the Spanish Baroque UNAM UK - Centre for Mexican Studies

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is an original and innovative writer, who, on the one hand, is inserted into the poetic and dramatic tradition of the Golden Age and, on the other, sometimes surpasses it and astonishes us with that excess. The Cervantes Institute London, in collaboration with King's College London's Modern Language Centre and UNAM-UK Centre for Mexican Studies, invite to the course "Sor Juana and the Hispanic Baroque" taught by Dr. Dolores Bravo Arriaga within the framework of the Extraordinary Chair "Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz."

The course of Dr. Bravo Arriaga will make an interesting exploration about the life and work of the author from New Spain and will be held on two dates. On the fisrt session on June 4 she will discuss Sor Juana's correspondence and her work in the field of theater, while the second session will focus on her poetry. The attendees of both sessions will receive a participation certificate.

Dr. Dolores Bravo Arriaga is a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM and an important specialist in Sor Juana. Her lines of research are the popular and religious festivals of the Vice-Regal Period, the hagiography of New Spain and the life and work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. She is a member of the National Research System and in 2007 she received the National University Award for Teaching in the field of Humanities. She is currently a professor and researcher at the College of Hispanic Letters and Chairholder of the cathedra "Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz" of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters.
