Spanish Paintings at the National Gallery and the Wallace Collection
Instituto Cervantes in London, in collaboration with UNED UK, presents the talk "Spanish painting in the collections of the National Gallery and the Wallace Collection."
The event will feature two renowned specialists in Spanish art: Daniel Ralston, Curator of Spanish painting at the National Gallery, and Xavier Bray, Director of the Wallace Collection, who will provide presentations on their respective collections. Afterwards, there will be a round table discussion, moderated by Dr. Amaya Alzaga (UNED), where various aspects related to these collections will be debated.
Both experts will outline a journey through the most important paintings of the Spanish school that these institutions hold. They will address issues such as the English taste for Spanish painting - which particularly valued genre scenes over religious ones - the gradual discovery of the great masters - Murillo, Velázquez, Zurbarán, El Greco, and Goya - and the different ways in which Spanish works entered these collections.
