Watching a film by Luis Buñuel is an unsettling experience. His work abounds with unpredictable emotional beats, sacrilegious images, strange juxtapositions; his films attack our conformity. Who is Luis Buñuel?
In January and February 2024, The Garden Cinema embarks on a journey of research, which will include academic presentations, special events and discussions with his, who will also be invited to help us unravel Buñuel's legacy.
Programme
- Buñuel-inspired launch party followed by screenings of "Un Chien Andalou" and "L'Age D'Or") with live electronic music accompaniment by A'Bear, ending with a screening of "Simon of the Desert".
- Week 1: Screenings of "Los Olvidados", "Land Without Bread" and "The Exterminating Angel".
- Week 2: Screenings of "Nazarín", "Tristana" and "Viridiana". After the screening of "Viridiana", on 25 January, there will be a round table discussion with prestigious academics who will debate Buñuel's complex work, with contributions from the audience.
- Week 3: "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", "Belle de Jour" and "That Obscure Object of Desire".
- Week 4: "Women of Surrealism", with films by Maya Deren, Germaine Dulac and Barbara Hammer. The screening will be followed by a discussion addressing their legacy and examining the politics surrounding the historical under-representation of their work.
