Rendezvous with cinema. "The volunteer"

The virtual film club Cita con el cine closes its 2024 programme with Nely Reguera's La voluntaria (The Volunteer).

The Spanish filmmaker's second feature film - after the acclaimed María (y los demás) - tackles the thorny issue of refugee camps in Europe and, through its main character, gets the viewer to reflect on the limits of commitment.

Synopsis: Marisa is a recently retired doctor who decides to travel as a volunteer to a Greek refugee camp, where, in her opinion, they need people like her. When she arrives there, it becomes clear that she has nothing to do with the others, and when she meets little Ahmed, the boundaries between the need to care and the need to feel useful begin to blur.

The activity is moderated by staff from the Cervantes Institute and includes the participation of specialists linked to the making of the film (filmmakers, scriptwriters…). Enjoy cinema in Spanish!
