Libertad (Freedom)
In this directorial debut, the worlds of two very different teenage girls collide when Libertad flies over from Colombia to join her mother, Rosana, a long-term, live-in carer and housekeeper for a well-to-do Catalan family. Suddenly, 15-year-old Nora’s boringly comfortable summer holiday looks set to be a lot more adventurous with her aptly named new playmate, who exudes confidence and experience. An intense friendship blossoms between the girls, much to the consternation of Nora’s mother, Teresa. As Libertad and Nora navigate adolescence, they each struggle with the mother-daughter relationship, Libertad resenting Rosana’s ten-year absence abroad, and Nora blaming Teresa for a looming family breakup. But as the heady summer days come to an end, everyone will be a little older and a little wiser.
We are pleased to welcome actor Maria Morera for a Q&A following the screening of Libertad on Thu 31 Mar.
