Butterfly's Tongue

Butterfly's Tongue Sogetel / Las Producciones del Escorpión / Canal+ España / Televisión Española

It is a key work in the filmography of the director José Luis Cuerda, this adaptation of several stories by the writer Manuel Rivas which demonstrates the spirit of renewal and open-mindedness of the republican school, which is embodied by an elderly teacher played by Fernando Fernán-Gómez.

The setting of this story in Galicia, the writer's hometown, is common in Cuerda's work in works such as El bosque animado (The Animated Forest) or the later The Education of Fairies, and links his style with a naturalistic philosophy that is very appropriate for the precepts that the leading character aims to instil in his students.

Synopsis: In 1936, Don Gregorio teaches Moncho with dedication and patience all his wisdom in relation to general knowledge, literature, nature and even women. But the background of the political threat always exists in the background, especially when Don Gregorio is attacked for being considered an enemy of the fascist regime. As a result, a gap opens up between these two friends, brought about by the force of the context that surrounds them.
